Notes
Mr. John Collins (Uncle Jack) was born in Dover in 1896. At a very young age he fished for cod and salmon. When he was 9 years old he fell out of a fishing boat and lost his hearing. He was quick to adapt and soon learned to lip read. John built a fishing stage and wharf on the beach close to his home. This was where he stored his fishing gear and mended his nets. His nieces and nephews would often visit him when he was working in the stage, which he kept spotless and well organized. He would often go to the stage just to watch the ocean and smoke his pipe. John continued fishing until 1975. He passed away in 1983.
