Notes
The Abbott Family was established at Bonavista by the mid-eighteenth century, erecting homes and fishing premises at Newman’s Point, in the area known historically as Mockbeggar. Today, the fish store and flake which comprise Samuel Abbott Premises are the only remaining vestiges of an early major family fishing enterprise. They were originally the property of planter Samuel Abbott, who fished in Bonavista Bay and along the coast of Labrador late in the eighteenth century. The fishing room was restored in 2007. The flake needed new longers and about half of its posts and shores were replaced. This store also required substantial work: replacing about half of the sills, replacing some sheathing, building new window and door boxes, restoring the original window sashes and setting a stone foundation. Prior to restoration, the store had been clad in clapboard and plywood. “The building was believed to have had cedar shingles on all four sides,” reports the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation. “Complete with cedar shingles on all four sides again, the building now indicates its original construction period.”
