Description of Historic Place

Built in 1899, William Ellis Saint House is a good example of late nineteenth/early twentieth century vernacular architecture in Newfoundland. Located in Bonavista, NL the two-and-a-half storey, steep gable roof house is a highly visible landmark in the town. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.

Heritage Value

William Ellis Saint House was designated a Registered Heritage Structure by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1995 due to its aesthetic value.

William Ellis Saint House has aesthetic value as it is a good example of vernacular architecture of this period. There have been few alterations to the architectural style of the building since its construction and thus most style elements remain intact.

William Ellis Saint House has further aesthetic value as a landmark in the community of Bonavista. Its location at a high elevation makes the house a highly visible structure in the town.
